Social Media: Boon or Bane?

A platform where you can meet people from all over the world, all ages, genders and vivid personalities without commitment of friendship. Such a place sounds perfect. Yet, we argue over whether it is good or bad now that it finally exists.

Yes, I am talking about social media, another controversy that everyone but the latest generation is concerned with. Is it good or bad for others, I do not know; but I support it.
For me it has always been a place to find motivation and comfort; here’s why:

The countless times we have felt alone about something, say facing a challenge in studies. We ask about it on social media and we have people from all over the world helping us, supporting us and resonating with us. It gives us a sense of comfort that everyone is going through it and we can get through together.

Next, it is so much easier to find people who will understand you and support you. Around us, we usually stay in contact with, at the most, 50 to 60 people at a time, and it is very hard o find 5, who will understand you. On social media, you have authors, bloggers, artists and people of all professions, genders and problems. You can post about yourself and find people who share similar interests and/or professions.

Lastly, it is great place to explore the world and find out about new cultures, art forms and hobbies. I discovered crocheting, food and self-care on Instagram. Now I have discovered pages that share poetry and books and author content. All of this has been a great help in discovering new things in my profession.

Should you say it is unsafe, due to cyber bullying, data hacking, etc. I would serve in my defence; it is because you have not followed the basic rules of cyber-security. Like, never share real age, do not comment, never contact/text strangers. Never share live location, keep minor accounts private and always report cyber-bullies. Be it your or others, keeping each other and ourselves safe is our responsibility. If you say the world should make itself safe, I won’t try to protect myself. That is simply going make you a vulnerable target and nothing else.

On that note, I hope we can agree that social media is a necessity and can do wonders if handled correctly.
