Rom-Com has been an ever-loved genre of our times, one I have felt quite reluctant towards for long. But after hearing all the praise for the latest pieces by Lynn Painter, I was intrigued to check the book out.
It is an utter delight if you enjoy a regular cheesy drama.
The plot follows Liz as she navigates love’s many challenges when her elementary school crush Michael comes back. Unfortunately, she isn’t half as close with him as her dear nemesis Wesley might be. And to get close to price charming , she must take help from one of his knights (Wes). Hate him as she might, needs must and it’s only a matter of up until prom. Though as she sees Wes’ dedication and care for helping her through everything, despite the slight fondness he shows; Liz might be considering the knight instead of the prince. A sub plot including the relation between Liz and her step mom Helena is flawlessly included.
My thoughts: It was not one of my favorites to be very honest. The plot was good, but some things overpowered the sweet innocence of teen love. Like too many mentions of kissing and romance. Liz’s dead mum plays a very “influential” role to the plot. She seems to be the reason Liz is a romantic with a knack for classic rom coms. The best part for me, about the book would be the realization Liz has about how she has been living her life by the end.
The characters were designed to fit a typical rom com but still managed to feel real. Wes was a very cad character for me, not the choice I expected Liz to make after all the lessons her mother gave her. Liz was a hopeless romantic, living her life to keep someone else alive. Trying to replicate some other life you could say. She was still a fun FMC to follow the story with. The friendship with Jocelyn (her best friend ) was supposed to have been Liz’s support, not something that should have been sidelined the way it was.
It wasn’t all terrible. In fact, it was my first rom com and a perfect one if you’re a sucker for those. I am not a fan of the genre, but it’s a nice book non the less. The pop culture references keep readers connected and drawn to the story.
All in all I give this a:
(Personal rating) ⭐⭐⭐
(For the readers) ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Wishing you a giggly read,
Janx 🙂
