Understanding Global Warming: Causes and Consequences

Global warming has taken the world by storm. Quite literally. In a satirical comment made by an Instagram user, it was said that the dystopian and sci fi novels should be shifted to current affairs. Such is the state we have brought the world to. I believe to live in today’s world is to know the impact of global warming. Although, at the core of it, what is global warming?

In short, “Global Warming” refers to the rapid increase in Earth’s surface level temperature due to greenhouse gasses released in the process of [primarily] burning fossil fuels.

It sounds very simple now, this very large issue. Because it is only the seed, and the tree growing from it. Well, let’s say it has its share of complicated branches.

If you may have noticed, these days summers are much hotter than your parents claim to remember them. The days are hot rather than warm. We also have random rainfall. Last year, we had rain in October and a bit this January.

Why is that? HOW is that? Well, the temperature rise is a pretty direct consequence of the Earth heating up. The rain is part of a water cycle. Without evaporation, precipitation is not possible. Evaporation needs heat. Which we have plenty of. So, the temperature rises and the water from different water bodies evaporate. Which then results in full clouds and then rain.

In some cases, this has even led to untimely storms. Hurricanes like Helene and Milton have gained intensity due to climate change.

A less watery issue, is fires. The warming temperature and drying surroundings are the perfect breeding ground for fires. Fires like those in LA. Which have grown so intense, almost the entire city is in ashes. Which only supports the satirical statement made earlier.

These are all rising concerns, caused by global warming. An issue almost out of hand. In today’s day, people are doing their best to reduce their gas emissions. Choosing eco friendly methods, like biking or walking. Although these are all great choices, they can only make a difference when a majority makes them. Choosing walking over the car, or keeping the window open rather than using the air conditioning are small choices one can make on a daily basis. If enough of us make them, it can make a large difference.

At the end of the day, global warming cannot be shut down as we develop with our industries. Which is why we must do our best to try to minimize it as much as we can.
