Book review by Janhavi ❤
In the hottest months of the year, it becomes almost a reflex to reach for cold water, lemonade, popsicles, ice, water. It becomes, for humans and all animals, second nature to seek relief; no matter how interesting the source may be.
Michiko Aoyama’s latest book reads like the relief provided from an ice tea on a 50-degree Celsius day. Everyone is seeking relief from something, and what better place to find it than at a children’s ride in a park?
If you have ever stood under the shade of a tree and experienced the cool breeze of its maternal protection, you know exactly what this hippo is to the characters.
The book doesn’t follow a particular plot-like structure, but rather has multiple stories that intersect at moments without influencing one another in the sense of plot as such.
From little children to old men, we all need a pause and some help to aid us in our healing. And Michiko Aoyama reminds us of this fact.
Her writing is like that of an old grandpa reminiscing the days of his youth. The book could very well be written by an old man in touch with life.
While I don’t have words to describe how good and fulfilling this book is, I think it can be best described as a warm and cozy slice of life that helps you remember that there is magic in the world as long as you choose to believe in it.
While the book is generally easy to read, it is best read with time on your hands. I finished it in two sittings and absolutely loved the characters and gentle ways in which Michiko Aoyama explores faith, belief and relations.
If you like cozying up in the summer with soft, sweet, slice of life books, this collection of stories is perfect for you.
