Bad Blood by Jennifer Lyn Barnes

Review by Janhavi ❤
This is no longer the last book in The Naturals series. Which makes me extremely happy. A novella followed soon after digitally, and now we are about to get a proper fifth christmas novel.

But, before we get there, I desperately need to review all existing novels. Thus, I present to you, my rather uhm, obsessive rant about this gem of a book.

Starting strong, this book has more trigger warnings than a plot, which is saying something, because this is the book where the plot thickens and really gets, well, NOT 13+.

                            SPOILER ALERT
Bad blood carries on where all in ends, at the reveal that Cassie’s mom is in fact, alive. Although the setting is now in their home base, this book revolves around the final mystery of what happened to Cassie’s mother, the people behind it, and how it all ties off to Cassie’s own life, past, and family.

This book draws on the previous books for context and plot. Bad Blood is a lot more plot driven and interconnected with the other books, so reading it as closely with All In as possible increases the enjoyment factor.

Although it is heavily plot driven, the book manages to strike a balance of character development and story.

I found this book very Casie centred, but it gives us a glimpse into Michael and  a new Natural. The addition of whom reveals more about the original five than I had anticipated.
By the end, there were a lot more layers uncovered than anything expected from a thriller.

I was emotional as hell by the end of this book, the plot twists are CRAZY. The reveals and the ending left my jaw hanging.

The characters as always were immaculate. In touch with reality and humanity. Cassie’s monologues actually reflect the train of thought in the reader’s mind and make sense in the moment, rather than being random and self centred. The others develop well too, staying in their track of personality without staying stagnant.

If you buy the digital edition, you will get a copy of Twelve attached, which is a small sweet treat and requires context of older books. Love the characters there too, it may not be a LOT, but it is a great peek into their lives and progress with the FBI.

My favourite part of this book and series is the detailing and world building by JLB, it’s never a dull moment and spreads far beyond blood and broken teenagers. The story feels rooted in truth without holding back on the imagination.

I genuinely hope you read the existing books before the new one releases this year end ❤

Love and hugs and prayers (you’ll need them)
